Help, Such As it Is

Help?

This is very much a work in progress. If there things that confuse you, please contact me here or using the link at the bottom of the page. I will answer you and also update the help as I have time. And fix bugs and add features.

Registering and Logging In

You can see almost everything as an unregistered guest, but in order to participate, you need to log in. Click on Register in the Log In menu. You do not have to enter your email address, but it will make it possible to recover your password if (or when!) you forget it.

You can choose in your profile whether you want to work in Grams or Ounces, C or F temperatures, or mm/dd/yy or dd/mm/yy dates. You can also choose to keep your roast log and cupping entries private. (But please consider sharing!)

Roast Log

Enter roast batches on the Roast Log. Click on the Add a Batch button at the upper right of the page. Pick a coffee or blend, the roaster, the roast profile or target temperature. You can enter your target temperatures and times, the crack times, etc. Almost everything is optional. But please tell us how it came out! And when it is ready, enter a cupping report if you want.

You can choose to see only your batches by checking the Only My Entries box a the bottom. When you enter batches, you can choose to make them private so only you can see them.

Sweet Maria's has a nice guide to roast levels.

Here is a Roast Worksheet that you can fill out by hand while roasting.

Cupping Log

Descriptions of cupping terms are used with permission from Denny Robbins of Captain's Coffee.

You can enter cupping reports on your roast batches. You have to taste them to comment, right? If someone else tastes your product and wants to comment, please enter the report for them and give them credit in the notes.

You can choose to see only your cupping reports by checking the Only My Entries box a the bottom. When you enter reports, you can choose to make them private so only you can see them.

You also can enter a report on any blend.

Coffees

You can add coffees to the Coffee List. Click on the Add a Coffee button at the upper right of the page. You can also edit any coffee on the list, but be nice. Let's not get into wars over how to spell Yirgacheffe and Harrar!

There are a lot of check boxes to help categorize the coffees, but they by no means cover every distinction. Use the Notes field liberally.

Blends

You can add new blends on the Blends List. Click on the Add a Coffee button at the upper right of the page. A blend can be two or more coffees, any number of coffees, but be reasonable. The coffees can be belended either before or after roasting, but a blend that is roasted before blending can't be selected when you enter a roast batch because, well, it's already roasted!

Inventory

You can keep an inventory of your coffee here. Under the Lists menu, pick My Inventory to add your many bags of coffee. Under the Reports menu, pick Current Inventory to see a report of what you have. If enter your inventory, you see how much you have of each coffee on the Coffee List.

Your inventory information is always private. No one will ever see it. There is no option to make your inventory public.

When you enter a roast batch, if you select the bag you took the beans from and if you enter yhour starting weight, the coffee will automatically be subtreacted from your inventory. If you take from two bags, the whole weight will be subtracted from the one you select. You will have to manually subtract the balance from the other bag. If you roast two coffees together, you will need to adjust them manually.
